Setting as Catalyst for Passion in The Storm The setting for The Storm by Kate Chopin begins with a thunderstorm. The first characters that the author mentions are Bobinot and his son Bibi. They buy a can of shrimps for Calixta but are prevented from getting them to her by the storm (Chopin, 96). The author changes the setting and tells about Calixta at home. A man named Alcee arrives at her house that she has not seen in a long time. The violence of the storm forces Alcee and Calixta into the house and then into passion that ends at the same time as the storm. Chopin uses setting as a catalyst to this action, a parallel to the passion between the characters, and as a key to the theme of the story. The setting in The Storm forces Alcee and Calixta together and into each others arms. The storm serves as a parallel to the passion between Alcee and Calixta. The storm is unavoidable and so is the passion because of it. When the storm forces them into each others arms, the familiarity with their previous lives takes over and they begin having an affair (97). The storm ending at the same time as the passion, implies that they are parallel with each other. Just as the storm is a passing event that changes nature for a short time, so the affair is passing and changes the emotions of Alcee and Calixta. A storm leaves the world peaceful, bright and clean. The author portrays the affair as leaving their family relationships peaceful and full of new joy. With the last line of the story, So the storm passed and everyone was happy, (99) Chopin compares the storms outcome with that of the affair. The storm is key to the story because it is the all-powerful force of nature that drives the two lovers together, which would be almost impossible without the storm. The Art of Liberal Arts â€Å"I can’t go to a liberal-arts college. My parents are conservatives!† I told my eighth grade teacher. He laughed and then went on to explain what a liberal-arts college actually is. Like many others, I believed a common misperception about the liberal-arts. In â€Å"The New Liberal Arts† by Sanford J. Ungar, the writer explains wrong ideas about the liberal-arts to a college-based audience including students, professors, and administration. He explains the importance and relevance of a liberal-arts education. Ungar claims that it is a better investment than narrow, specific technical training because it prepares students for career placement by giving them skills in communicating effectively, thinking creatively, and understanding comprehensively. I agree with Ungar and I think he successfully explains the reasons why liberal arts are important and relevant in today’s society. The film was shot in 2009 in England. The story is about the power of conformity and the injustice promoted in the society. There are different kinds of people in the society who have different perspectives about accepting the truth. Initially, it has been seen that the teacher is teaching 2 + 2 = 5 in the classroom. The teacher is forcing the students to tell the same by frightening them. A student told that 2 + 2 = 4 and tried to convince his classmates. The senior students shot the child with imaginary guns and his blood filed on the board. The story was based on the dictatorship of one group over the other group who are being oppressed. The social dominance theory would be suitable to understand the social message given in the short film. This theory depicts that intergroup relations should focus on the stability of group-based social hierarchy (Dominelli, 2012). In the story, the teacher was showing dictatorship or autocratic behavior who wants to shape the behavioral attributes as well as the perception of students who are being oppressed. Similarly, in society, people who are being oppressed are at the lower level of social hierarchy and the political power are at the top level of the social hierarchy. These ruler class authorities are trying to dominate common people in the society by forcefully implementing their wrong decision in the society showing their power of authority. However, some people do not show direct disagreement towards the power class, but they are following the truth for survival. The aim of this film is to make people aware that some autocratic ruler class people are misusing their power to direct the society members towards a wrong direction and whoever wants to raise their concerns against these powered people, are punished. In this context, the author wants to guide viewers thinking about that fact that, if everybody believe about a wrong fact, it does not make a true sense and individual should show that confidence to fight for truth at every stage of life (Healy, 2008). There was more than one subject in the film having different perspectives. It has been seen that the senior students were the followers of teacher that is similar to the political leaders in a state who supports the autocratic leadership of the government. The student who protested against the teachers thought had different kinds of thought process. However, another kind of people were there who did not presented that they disagree the thought process of ruler class, but they know and implement the right perception of truth in their lives and hope for the day where others would support them. The story was made in Morocco, more specifically; the film was shot at the Gourougou mountains in northern Morocco where Sub-Saharan migrants are living with a hope to jump the barrier into Melilla. However, the story was about the universal story of migration. The story highlighted the concerns regarding violence and mistreatment of migrants by both Moroccan and Spanish authorities. In addition, the story also highlighted the terrible lifestyle of the migrants. The author identified that Europe is encouraging and paying Morocco to control the borders and regulate migration for ensuring that migrants could not arrive at Europe (Healy, 2008). Social workers should have in-depth awareness about the social issues for improving the social status. Pakistan is one of those countries, which has been accused of match fixing more than any other country has ever been accused of. The first major accusation came under the Justice Qayum report according to which various Pakistani cricketing stars were involved in fixing matches, these included Wasim Akram, Waqaq Younis, Inzimam-ul-Haq, Mushtaq Ahmed and various others. The Justice Qayum report offered various penalties for the accused but his recommendations for penalizing the cricketers for their gruesome act were totally shunned. This day marked the darkest day for Pakistans cricket as the three Pakistani players were sentenced to imprisonment for varying periods. Mohammad Amir for accepting his crime was awarded a lesser punishment which was 6 months in a young offenders jail while Mohammad Asif was sentenced for a years imprisonment. Salman Butt was handed the cruelest punishment of 30 months of imprisonment as he was leading the clan.
